The huge problem with this type of analysis is the good ole‘ causation vs correlation. We don‘t know if him getting a triple-double made his team win more often or if his team winning made him get a triple-double more often. It‘s most likely something in between but we don‘t really know if his performance was the deciding factor.

I want to start by saying I love your content and you do great work.

This analysis falls apart when you consider maybe Russ is just far more likely to get triple doubles against a losing team. You should provide data showing the winning percentages of the teams he played against so we can draw a more meaningful conclusion.

The only counter-argument I have against what Jimmy’s saying is that correlation does not equal causation. Just because a team tends to win more when a player has more triple doubles doesn’t mean that the wins come from the triple doubles. It could be that for those wins, the team as a whole did better and got the win because everybody worked well together (not just because 1 guy did well). For these games, the team was probably able to feed their star player triple doubles, therefore making it look like more triple double = more wins. Just food for thought 🤷🏻‍♂️

I think your missing 1 thing though, often when your team is winning and theres no real threat of losing is when the bigs will give the guards rebounds helping them get to the triple double. In those cases the triple double means very little, and of course normally when a guy like giannis, harden or lbj is getting a triple double theyve just dominated and that does normally lead to the W

I think triple doubles are more common simply due to having more highly competent shooting and scoring teammates and also 3 pointers causing longer rebounds for guards and forwards to grab.

I remember there was a game back in 2017 where kd and steph were laughing at Russ because he was chasing after a triple double. There was also a game a few years back against the jazz where Russ literally wouldn’t shoot the ball in a close game in the 4th because he was 1 ast away from a triple double. Russ chasing stats is and is low basically iq is the reason he won’t win a championship. When it’s winning time he won’t put the teams success before his own.

Great video as usual. Thanks! TD’s went up when bigs migrated to the perimeter or the bench and dumps to the post got replaced by drives and dishes or passes to three point shooters who either make it or produce a more equitable rebound opportunity.

Love the content you’re my favorite basketball RStoolssr. I think Russ is taking all the possessions in all his games so when he’s playing well all the shots, shot creations and rebounds are coming from him and he gets a triple double when he is trying for those things on an off night the team doesn’t win. I doubt his usage goes down when he doesn’t get a triple double

Really amazing job on this as always! If he had more games with fewer than 4 turnovers I’d think the winning percentage would go up, but either way he’s still winning. Less turnovers is always good as long as it doesn’t drop his assist numbers (less TOs might mean less passes from Westbrook)

Love the quality of your channel. There's just no way for me to believe Russ can raise a team's ceiling more than barely-in-the-playoffs. He's a floor raising talent with a hard cap on how much success his team can have, even more so now. His talent doesn't fit well with other talented players. That's not uncommon though. I feel the same way about lebron, Kobe, young Jordan, and many other greats but the ones who won championships are the ones who were good enough to win despite how poorly they fit with other elite players (and they still needed some very niche teammates to do it for the most part). Guys like Duncan, older Jordan, garnett, curry, bird, and magic I think have a much better approach to winning basketball. They can enhance the talent of their teammates and lead the best teams the NBA has ever seen. When they end up with the right pieces around them, you get teams like the 73 win warriors, the "beautiful game" spurs, or the '96 bulls. When you have a bunch of talented guys who don't pair well with other talented guys, you get teams like this year's Lakers or the '04 Lakers. Westbrook doesn't do anything on offense unless he has the ball (lebron can be a little like that, too but he's better about finding cuts or good spot ups) and can singlehandedly torpedo your defense. He's great for winning regular season games and selling tickets, but not for playoff basketball and now three teams have been happy to let him go try to win elsewhere.

The breakdown definitely helped me get a dif view on Westbrook but I still seen this man box out his teammate and leave someone open in the clutch to hunt for the triple double not caring if they lose as a result
