Metroid Dread for the Nintendo Switch is finally here, being the first brand new 2D Metroid game in years and it's fantastic to see Samus again. Completing any Metroid game is quite the challenge, and Metroid Dread may be the toughest one of all, and the scariest.

I’m 33 years old and this is the first Metroid I ever played. I felt in love, by far my favorite 2021 game and I play 95% of the time PS5 games. A bunch of mechanics were new to me and sometimes I had to go to RStoolss to see where to go next, but in general the game is a masterpiece and I just hope I don’t have to wait 20 years to play another one.
TheBoshman95 Пре 3 дана
This one was a good one, but not great like Prime and Super. The environment and music were dull, the EMMIs got really old very fast, the map design wasn't too good (you would get dumped right where you needed to go all the time and they were way too many one-way passages), there wasn't a lot of actual exploration because there was usually only one immediate path forward... The game feels good to play, though. Controlling Samus and all the new movements and power ups are great! And the plot and story is good too! I love the new lore.

I've never been good at shine sparking, but they made it much more accessible in this game. With that said though, the puzzles utilizing shine sparking became much more difficult, so when all was said and done...I still "stink" at shine sparking. No matter how long I spend on it, I just don't have the dexterity to do this really well. Either that, or I don't have the same amount of play time to commit to getting really good at these games anymore (a lot changes in someone's life over 25 years). Despite those personal issues, I still say this game is Game of the Year, easily.

I’m 14 years old and I’ve almost exclusively played Nintendo games, and I’ll just say that it was fun, it was hard and exhilarating. But not to the point exhausting that I don’t know what to do or it’s hard. This is my first Metroid game and it was amazing. Discovering every nook and cranny is very fun for me but it’s not to the point frustrating finding out what to do next or it’s to hard. I might even just pick up samus returns for 3DS

I have only ever played one other metroid game: Metroid Fusion. I didn't even know dread was a sequel when I for it. But I love it. I think the game is ok for new players. There is that item that shows you breakable blocks later on, and every room that has a hidden item glows on the map. Also I feel like wall jumps are intuitive to any one who frequently plays 2D platformers. I love the difficulty... but then again there were a few bosses... namely the final boss that I almost dropped the game.

I was actually wondering how super casual players beat Raven Beak if I consider myself experienced and still died 15 times to him, but god damn, everytime I died I smiled and laughed because of the amazing fight, challenging yet not impossible, I knew I could dodge all attacks and tried until I got it. Felt great.

Back in 2018, I bought Super Metroid on the 3DS Virtual Console on pure impulse. I had gone to buy Pokemon Dream Radar, which I did, but I also nabbed Super Metroid for reasons I don't quite recall. Maybe it was a highlight or happened to be on sale at the time? I know that the TRG playthrough where Emile went in blind played into my decision to buy it. Anyway, I bought it, I played it... and I loved it. Enough to go on to buy Zero Mission and Fusion on Wii U Virtual Console, and then getting Samus Returns, this time physically. And Dread? when that was announced I knew I had to play the rest of the series. after finishing Super, I went into Zero Mission but for some reason I left it unfinished until Dread was announced. And I went onto finish the series, just barely not getting to the end of Fusion before Dread's release. (In my defense, I'm easily distracted). And Dread? I think it's officially my favorite in the series. Everything just feels so _good._ The gameplay, the story, the environments and *especially* the animation. I loved watching Samus move, from just running around to her motions in the cutscenes. Also I loved how the game gently guided me. Once I got a new upgrade, I wasn't far from an area that let me use it to progress. Oh, and the bosses! As hard as this game is, the bosses's attacks are so well telegraphed that I just needed to learn how to dodge each attack, getting better and better with each try, and learn which attack each animation foreshadows. And here's the thing, I'm not exactly good at games! I'm clearly good enough yo beat Metroid games, but it takes a lot of learning for me. I'm a very casual player. And even so, each and every boss felt *fair*. Especially the final boss! Before I got to him, though I did my best to dodge spoilers I did see a few people vaguely say how it was a tough battle. It was, but I never once wanted to tear my hair out! Every time I died, I had learned a few more tricks. Every time, I got just a bit better. Until I finally beat him, and it was so, *so* satisfying. The only boss that I was actually frustrated at was the one that gives you the cross bombs, and only really because I couldn't figure out how to dodge one of those attacks (the one that forms a grid with small gaps over the whole screen, I think I could squeeze into those gaps with the morph ball but looks like I need to jump while in ball form and it's easy to go too high up?). Oh, and Kraid at first, until I realized that his attacks have patterns that I needed to learn. I'm taking a Metroid Break right now, but I think I'll get started on the Prime games sooner or later. I already have the Trilogy via the Wii U eShop, after all, and gotta prepare for Prime 4, whenever that comes out.

I don't have the same history with Metroid games as you, and a lot of people (only 2D Metroid I completed before this was Zero Mission), so I'm quite proud of my 78% item in 11 hrs 16 min first try, no walkthourgh, though the real time would probably be 15+ hours if the timer counted every time I died to a boss fight or got caught by an E.M.M.I. I did have a good time over all playing, but I did feel the spikes in difficulty was sometimes a bit too steep, especially in those battle where you need to keep track of every single button. I would also have liked for free button mapping. I can't even count the number of times I died to bosses when I tried to jump over and instead flash-stepped right into them, or messed up storm missiles because I jumped instead of firing. At the end I felt no great urge to go back to try and find more secrets, like I did after Zero Mission. I'm fine with leaving dread at 78% and it will probably be a few years before I go back for a second playthrough

Like the Guardians, the EMMIs are meant to be the “dreaded.” no pun intended. Another youtuber explained WHY we shouldn’t succeed at countering emmis (variable frame window), and honestly, it would’ve been cool if BotW had made the laser timings variable, too. EMMI and Guardians are meant to inspire true fear in us - not annoyance. (I imagine, though, from Samus’ pov she’s just tired of them after the fifth one)

Having never played the Prime series and only the 2D Metroids...IF we get DLC....I would not mind a remixed version of the map and/or an extra difficulty mode of some kind that doesn't require the suitless glitch. I think a remixed map would be super fun, but that probably won't happen due to how tightly knit the map is for progression.

21:50 when you started talking about abilities being teased, my mind immediately rocketed back towards the Emmi's and how their codes like E.M.M.I 3MB is actually hinting at the ability you will get after defeating them, as MB can be interpreted as Morph Ball and made me wonder more about what abilities I might get after each E.M.M.I I defeat and I found that really fucking cool!

Play the Prime Trilogy. Incredible games. But don't go into them expecting a Dread-like experience. The right state of mind is to consider the 2D Metroid games and the 3D Metroid Prime games as two different faces of a same coin: different gameplay, slower moves, different feels, but it's so fucking good all the same.

part of missing emmi inputs isn't that people are inconsistant, the timing is too. They have 3 different animations for each direction and method of being caught, and each has a window the trigger can start, giving you about 5 frames after to hit the input

Hi, first-time Metroid player here. The only exposure I've had to the metroid series has been through Smash/Subspace Emessary. Dread is my first metroid game. I thought I would like it, but it turns out I LOVE it. As you said Jerard, it made me feel like I was good at video games. To be clear, I am okay at video games haha. But Dread offered enough difficulty, yet enough "hints" to help me finish. Not only that, but I got so many of the items while going back to other areas I knew I could access that I thought, heck I'll just complete the game. And I did! 100%. I had to look a few things up, but generally, I was on the right track. It was totally satisfying and I was so pleased when I got to hear that classic metroid music too.

I'd like to correct something. This is NOT a hard game. It falls into the medium/difficult category for anyone that is moderately good at video games. Maybe that is more difficult than the average Nintendo game. But I don't believe it's inapproachable to most consumers and it's set up in a way to make the player feel empowered when they get the hang of the controls. This feels more like a gaming journalist complaint than a legitimate issue.

I never played a metroid game before, and i feel this game very welcoming and newbies friendly, i actually dont know what you are talking about, a wall jump is a basic easily guessed (and accidentally performed) by new players, and the game does tells you, as a part of the tutorial, to literally blast every wall with missiles, to blast everything if you feel like you cant continue your path, it also has a white glowing effect on the map to show you kinda of where are secrets, so even if you dont blast EVERY corner just for the sake of doing it, you will find those if you want to. I desagree, this game is very new players friendly.
