The best ingredient was whatever transfat they were using. After they changed their oil, the flavor changed. The spices mind as well just be regular salt. So a better quest would be to figure out what oil they used to use cause I bet that would ,make anything taste good.

You should do the 99X with MSG and buttermilk bath... in the right pressure cooker fryer with a touch of citric acid in the oil. Likely the Colonel was mad because they added MSG.

If you could have pressurized the frying process the 99x may have been better. Also, more importantly, I'm 57 years old and when I was much younger, KFC was a million times different than what you're tasting today. I'm talking about differences that changing the frying oil can't explain. So, if you are trying to match possible recipes from 40 or 50 years ago to what you and your wife are used to in your lifetimes it'll never happen.
